  • Funding Usage

To do necessary building modifications to provide rented shop spaces for a variety of artisans and makers and bring the building to code as needed. Spaces would include both permanent spaces as well as short term rentals (pop ups).

  • Business Plan

I am looking to develop a community based retail environment that would house both permanent and pop up artisans/makers. I am looking for a location with 4500-7000 sq. ft of available space. This would allow for not only a destination shopping experience, but would then allow for a continually refreshing group of shops to draw in clientele. These pop up shops would include seasonal selections, such as farmers market type vendors and holiday shopping opportunities. Community based opportunities could also be developed to provide space for exhibiting local artists work, school fundraising, sales opportunities for the Michigan Neuropsychological Society or other similar organizations, etc. Local acoustic musicians and DJ's would also be scheduled. The collective would also include a coffee/tea shop owner as well. Financial rental consideration would be given to an in house marketing consultant to ensure that both community and social media outreach was in place. Focus would be not only on the collective, but the independent shops as well. If the location allows, food trucks could be added on a scheduled basis to draw additional foot traffic. As an artisan of 30 years, I also have 25 years of management experience. I've held positions in several high end retail environments that include general manager, operations, merchandising, and direct sales marketing. This, in addition to being an artist in a weekend artisans market for the past 11 years, I believe gives me the background to not only understand what it takes to succeed financially as an artist, but to be able to understand the needs of other makers. As a shop owner that would have their own business in the collective as well as being the facility owner, I would draw on my experience to create an environment that would create the best opportunity for success for myself and the other artisans.

  • Self Identified Competition

Currently, I am unaware of any retail environments that exist as a full time location for local artists/makers to house their product and be present to sell to their customers. My business plan focuses on a targeted placement of a retail environment. One that it within walking distance of neighborhoods and within the downtown area of a city that is known for its support of local businesses and artists. I believe that a collective shop environment creates a professional "buy in" from the shop owners themselves, and from the community it resides in. As the farmers market and art show season in Michigan is typically from May 1st to September 30th, this would provide year round access to high quality, handmade goods, created in Michigan by Michigan residents.
