  • Business Plan

I own and operate the only natural curly hair salon within 80 aerial miles, possibly more. We are now in such demand that clients are driving from Lakeland, Tampa, Bradenton, all the way down to Naples/Ft Myers. There are some sole proprietors that have similar businesses with a similar concept in Sarasota County. Curls And Co is the only full size salon with an education program in place for licensed cosmetologists. I was asked by these young women to mentor them and so I have educated myself to being the best boss/leader possible. I now have 4 employees and find myself running out of space to not only accommodate our demand in clients but the demand of education for my staff. I myself was born in Sarasota Memorial Hospital in the year 1992. To see the amazing growth of my once small town has created so many opportunities for me but has also created many challenges as an entrepreneur. One of the good problems that we are facing is demand. We are SLAMMED right now. For it being off season and in SW Florida we are so incredibly busy that it is a blessing and a curse. I understand that a lot of other small businesses especially in the salon industry are not so fortunate. I am a go getter and refuse to "cap" myself off because of my square footage. My lease just went up $900.00 a month. Now at total of $4300.00 monthly not including CAM. As an entrepreneur one of my many jobs is to figure out how to adapt quickly under pressure and in any situation. I feel that I have truly beat the odds but creating more space is proving to be a difficult task as the build out alone would cost more than my modest house in South Venice. I started my business in late 2018. I was only in business a little over a year once Covid lockdown happened. I had to break up with my fiancé (10 years) due to his increasing drug addiction. I was forced to pay for his vehicle and my own, my mortgage as well as my dog and cat. To say it was difficult is an understatement. 2020 was so emotionally, physically, and financially devastating for all of us as a nation. I still and always will count my blessings. Reluctantly, I will admit, I hired the best employee you could ever ask for shortly after the lockdown was lifted. She was so inspired by the way I transformed not only her naturally "untame-able" curly hair, but her out look on herself had changed as well. She was so hungry with passion for helping other young woman embrace and love their natural texture that I eventually gave in and somehow managed to hired her. This young career driven woman (that is still by my side) trusted me to provide for her. I was very broke financially and mentally but I knew giving up was not the answer. You see when you have crazy frizzy hair that NO ONE can help you with, it messes with your head. Young woman are taught that their natural texture is wrong, it's bad, just brush it, why does it look that way, it's so dry, buy this, I'm going to straighten it for you sweety, etc. It's extremely demeaning to be told time and time again that there is something wrong with you let me "fix it", especially by beauty professionals. As a 12 year old I begged for straight hair and my single mother of two finally gave into my demands. I left the salon with chemical burns all over my scalp and what I thought was great hair. Then got made fun of for that! At 19 years old, eventually my hair broke off by trying to look like someone I wasn't. Hence my career in the hair industry. What we do at Curls And Co is sooooooo much more than a hair cut. We truly change lives. We educate and teach our clients how to embrace their natural selves. Now I have 4 employees that went through similar ordeals. We vow to help our community love and embrace their beautiful texture. By teaching our clients healthy hair practices we have created a community that can love their curls from young ages. I thought my passions would lead me to creating a community of confident curly haired clients but I now see that my destiny is so much more than that. I am now a 31 year old young woman. I have found a wonderful man to be my rock at home and yes I still have my house, dog, and cat. My future goal is to have my forever home for my salon and team. Also to franchise as a way for my staff to become entrepreneurs and secure their retirements. I also am in the process of creating a Florida friendly hair care line that will not harm the body or the environment. I have rejected multiple investors because one, I don't like debt. Two, I was young and unwilling to let my ego go. I am now not ashamed to ask for help. If the right investor came along then yes.

  • Self Identified Competition

Currently I do not have any competitors. Believe it or not I wanted to be a farmer. That was my childhood dream and still is some days. Thank God I am not a farmer as I can not imagine waking up at 4:00am every day! This is my destiny and I don't take it lightly. The passion and drive that I now have to lead the next generation of curl specialists comes from that little girl that wanted to be a farmer. I never cared about my looks, my hair, my clothes etc. I had so much fun being on my Mennonite family's farm in Pennsylvania that vanity was far from my mind. Once I went through puberty my hair changed and became a crazy mop on my head. Then came nicknames then to kids pulling my hair. That changes a young girl. Now there was something wrong with me. It was something that I never took into perspective, the way I looked. I worked every summer on the farm. I genuinely loved it but now it was just a way to pay to chemically straighten my hair before school would start. The farm work which I loved so much now became a job. At 19 I had fried my hair off until there was nothing left. I was a licensed cosmetologist at this point and I lost all of my clients and dignity. That is when I started to think differently. That is when I said enough is enough and I will figure this out not only for myself, but for other women too And so I have and will continue to do so. That is what makes Curls And Co different.
