  • Funding Usage

-Funding will be used for the following: 1. Hiring therapists to support the need for mental health services in underserved areas, as well as the growing number of veteran referrals for community providers. 2. Office space for in-person counseling, as the practice is currently only able to provide virtual services. 3. Free professional development opportunities for therapists in training (provisionally licensed), who often cannot afford the cost of clinical supervision, trainings or workshops.

  • Business Plan

Key Counseling, Coaching and Consulting, established in 2018, is currently a small practice that specializes in women's mental health, trauma and also supports veterans with PTSD. As a single provider practice, there are limitations to the number of clients that can reasonably be served. The goal would be to hire 1-2 contract therapists at a comparable pay rate to assist in expanding the practice's reach. The ability to offer in-person sessions with an office space that is located in an underserved area will also increase access to mental health, while accommodating clients who are not appropriately served via Telehealth. The practice owner is keenly aware of the shortage of mental health therapists and also desires to offer free professional development to include licensure supervision, National Counselor Examination (NCE) prep, workshops and other trainings to growing therapists who are new to the field and financially unable to afford such opportunities. These goals can realistically be achieved in less than 5 years with the appropriate funding. We have been experiencing a mental health crisis in our country since the pandemic. There is an increased need for mental health services that are affordable and accessible, and with the shortage of mental health professionals there is a need to grow and develop therapists that are often facing financial barriers to obtaining a state license. I am contacted frequently by therapists who are in need of supervision that is required by the state licensing board for a period of 2 years. The average hourly rate for clinical supervision is costly and often delays individuals from completing the process to become fully licensed. As a practice owner, counselor educator in higher education and clinical supervisor in two states, I am uniquely qualified to provide the support and development that therapists need in order to become licensed, as well as establish their own counseling practices. I am passionate about my field and about supporting the next generation of mental health professionals in this critical time of need. An investment in me will be an investment in the development of mental health professionals and an investment in the mental health of those that are in desperate need of services.

  • Self Identified Competition

Key Counseling, Coaching and Consulting is unique in being such a small practice that is able to offer a number of services with only one provider, the owner. Other counseling practices in the area tend to either be limited in multiple service offerings, especially with regards to clinical supervision of other therapists, or are larger group practices for which it would be unfair to make a comparison. My counseling practice respects the investment that clients are making in their mental health by ensuring they are more than just a number; thus, the quality of services is more of a priority than the quantity of services provided. I have a high retention rate because of the trust that has been established with my clients and the quality of care they are provided. Additionally, I am a highly sought out clinical supervisor because of my ability to train and develop exceptional therapists. I have essentially created a small community of therapists that are able to network and receive support from one another in a field that can oftentimes feel very isolating. I emphasize self-care and encourage the therapists I supervise to take intentional steps to avoid burn-out. There is great intentionally and compassion in everything I do as a practice owner. I don't say "yes" to all things; just the things that are important to me and are within my professional scope of practice. There are other counseling practices that accept clients with various mental health issues regardless of their expertise. This is a disservice, which often leads to clients giving up on the process, developing a negative view of therapy and sometimes choosing to not seek help again. That is terribly disappointing to me personally. As the owner of Key Counseling, I pride myself on helping clients to change their perception of mental health in giving them a positive experience from intake to termination.
