Outhouse Radio 99-3314652 | Government Grant Application

Outhouse Radio | Application Preview

Outhouse Radio is seeking government grants to upgrade their home broadcast studio and purchase modern equipment, enabling them to broadcast local high school games and community events. Residing in northern New Hampshire, they face limited radio station options and aim to enhance their connection with the community. Fund usage will include acquiring updated computers, audio equipment, a marti broadcast unit, and a broadcast console.

The business plan focuses on expanding their station's reach by enhancing their current streaming capabilities and seeking to increase their signal strength under FCC guidelines. Their goal is to provide coverage for local sporting events and programs that cater to the community's interests.

The grant's approval is crucial for the station's founder, who has a long background in broadcasting but became disabled after multiple spine surgeries. Starting this internet station has been a means to maintain his passion for broadcasting while contributing to the community, particularly in an area lacking diverse radio programming.

In terms of competition, Outhouse Radio faces established stations such as Mountain Country 97.3, The Outlaw, and WPKQ. However, their unique approach stands out. They prioritize variety over commercial charts, actively involve listeners in programming decisions, and support local artists through initiatives like the "Local Artist Launch." This listener-oriented model differentiates them from other stations and fosters a strong sense of community engagement.

  • Funding Usage

My wife and I plan to use the money to bring our home broadcast studio up to date and purchase more, updated equipment so we can broadcast local high school games and events to our community. Right now, being in the mountains of northern New Hampshire, our town is very limited on what stations we can pick up. This station not only keeps my love of broadcasting alive, but allows us to help our town and our neighboring town. We'd purchase updated computers and studio audio equipment, a marti broadcast unit and broadcast console.

  • Business Plan

We'd like to continue to expand our station and our signal so it reaches more people. Right now our emphasis is on streaming with a low-power FM transmitter operating under FCC Part 15 guidelines, so we can get our signal to our local town. We'd like to see about increasing our signal strength with the FCC. Our plan is to broadcast local school sporting events as well as community oriented programs. I've spent over 30 years in broadcasting and in 2020, after 5 spine surgeries, I became disabled. In order to keep me from depression, my wife suggested starting this internet station to help keep my love of broadcasting alive. The station allows me to do just that, one my own time, without being pushed. I still have a lot of life left in me, and unfortunately cannot hold down a regular job due to medication I have to take for my spine. The station not only helps me, but also my community since we live in a remote area of northern NH. Our choices for radio stations are very limited and none of the others pay an attention to our immediate location. The Outhouse gives us a chance to broadcast weather, community events, interviews, community oriented shows and more to the local area, and I'd like to keep doing that.

  • Self Identified Competition

Mountain Country 97.3 (Jefferson, NH) The Outlaw (Littleton, NH) (Country) WPKQ (North Conway, NH) (Alternative) It's very simple. Our station breaks every single rule of radio. During my 30 years of broadcasting, most of our listeners always complained about "Variety". I always heard them say "I hear the same song, the same time of day, every day".. of course, the station manager wouldn't believe it. That's what big radio is.. it's all about charts, not variety. Our station plays a better variety, is listener oriented, which means the listener can help program the station (suggest programs, music etc), we also play local bands and musicians from around the world, giving independent artists a launch pad with the "Local Artist Launch"
