Backwood Basic Salves C1466097 | Government Grant Application

Backwood Basic Salves | Application Preview

Backwood Basic Salves is seeking government grants to expand its business by establishing a storefront and attending weekly markets and craft events. The funding will support the production of more herbal salves, creams, oils, and loose herbs, enabling better accessibility for customers seeking fresh, local products. A full-time store would not only generate income for the owner's family but also allow for collaboration with other small businesses met through market interactions.

Over the next five years, the business aims to create a storefront, hire employees, grow herbs, host educational classes, and support local vendors and community events. The proposed location, Flathead, MT, currently lacks a nearby apothecary, making it challenging for residents to access fresh, organic herbs. The growing interest in holistic health further motivates this venture, as the owner wishes to provide knowledge about herbs and their uses.

Competition in the area includes a distant herbal supplier that is hard to locate and expensive, as well as a few local health food stores with limited, poorly stored herb options. Backwood Basic Salves plans to leverage connections with wholesalers from Idaho and Oregon to offer high-quality organic herbs at affordable prices, providing a distinctive advantage in both pricing and product knowledge.

  • Funding Usage

I am asking for this grant to be able to expand my business by making more products to be able to have a small store front, do weekly markets & craft events. With a small store I would be able to expand the products I make while at markets & other events, I can promote my store saying "I have even more in my store than what I have here." I make herbal salves, creams, oils & other herbal goodies. I am also working on loose herbs. So people can make and have access to loose, local & fresh herbs. If I get a big enough grant, I would LOVE to be able to support the community by buying wholesale products from other small businesses that I have made friends with from all the markets Ive done in 2024. Being able to have a store open full time would help me be able to provide for my family financially.

  • Business Plan

Over then next 5 years, I want a store front, be able to hire employees, grow as many herbs as I can vs out sourcing, be able to host classes on different things relating to herbs, be able to give back to the community in some way, be able to support local vendors & be a sponsor for different local events. Because where I want to open my store ( flathead, MT area) their is no apothecary anywhere close by. You either have to drive hours away or order online hoping you get fresh, organic herbs. With the world changing alot of people are looking more & more into holistic health. That is what I would love to be able to provide for my community is knowledge on herbs & how to use them if they dont know.

  • Self Identified Competition

*Spirt works herbs, 10 miles from me but they are hard to find, very expensive & alot of people dont know about them. I only found them because a friend happened to get lost & turned around in their driveway. *Few local health food stores with maybe 10-20 loose herbs that are hardly fresh due not being stored properly also not knowing who before you was able to self service those loose herbs. I am able to wholesale from a few different companies I know that are in ID & OR that are organic, I can sell to the public for affordable prices & make a profit all at the same time. I also know what herbs are good & not good for while knowing how to properly using them.
