  • Funding Usage

We will have to buy a truck (used), a new tractor (new), install new fencing to be able to expand our goat herd, install a water well, and need land use fees for the year. The truck will be bought used and kept under $15,000. The tractor will cost $25,000 including the attachments we need. Goat fencing will cost $5,000 and a water well will need to be dug to water pumpkins (they require A LOT of water) and will cost $8,000. Land use fees for this year are $16,000. We live on our own land, so this is how much our mortgage is annually.

  • Business Plan

In 2020, the pumpkin patch will produce our most value-added commodity to the farm. We will add a corn maze and tractor hay bale rides in year 2021. Our goat herd will expand from two females to five and one male so we can make and sell goat cheese. We also want to start a delivery service for the vegetables we grow in this year, as well as going to the farmer's market. This will create the need to expand our vegetable garden area and that will happen in 2022. In 2023, we will start planting fresh flowers to include with our farmer's market and delivery of produce in the area, along with perennial crops like asparagus. By 2024, we will have to look at hiring a few more employees to deliver the produce and flowers, as well as going to the farmer's market during the summers. The pumpkin patch will also require another employee by that time. In 2025, we will be a fully operational sustainable farm with many different value-added products to interest the community. . My husband and I both have served 20 years each in the military, and our children have been right there with us. Our dream is to run a farm, and we have already invested $300,000 in it from our own pockets. We are at the point in the business to being able to produce vegetables, but we can't sell them without getting this funding. My huband and I are very dedicated to this purpose because we believe it reflects positively on the community and it will bring families together and create memories for everyone.

  • Self Identified Competition

There is only one, Faye Whittmore Farms in Jasper, AL. They are 20 miles away from me. The others I have found are more than 40 miles away. My business is different from Faye Wittmore because they don't leave any pumpkins on the vine for people and kids to run through and pick out, they pick all of them and put them in a straight line on display in an unappealing manner (think straight rows of just orange pumpkins). I will do things a lot differently when it comes to that. I will not waste time on picking all of my pumpkins, I will pick and chose the best ones from each of my patches and put them on display to make it more appealing to customers to buy one or more than one. I will have carving pumpkins, cooking pumpkins, GIANT pumpkins, and decorative pumpkins, all planted and placed in a way that makes it fun as well as easy to pick your own OR pick from one of the displays, which will double as photo opportunities for the families. The time saved by not picking all of the pumpkins will go into interacting with all my customers to ensure they get the best experience from my farm than any others they have ever been to.
