The original intent of Unbound Recovery was to launch an Eating Disorders Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in Manhattan, Kansas to serve patients as young as 12. We have a massive service gap in Kansas, with the only other IOPs located in Kansas City and Denver, leaving an entire state unserved. Likewise, our community, and neighboring communities, have very few outpatient therapists or dieticians who are properly trained to treat eating disorders. Manhattan, our homebase, has approximately three outpatient therapists and fewer dieticians to serve our single community of ~50,000. Starting an IOP proved to be more difficult than expected and the need for revenue became more apparent. To ensure a revenue stream, we opened up the doors to outpatient treatment services. Currently, Unbound Recovery offers outpatient therapy and nutrition services, as well as care coordination. Five-year goals include: * To expand outpatient treatment services, including the addition of 1-2 therapists and 1-2 dieticians; * To relaunch IOP services for adolescents (12-17) and adults (18+); * To increase community engagement and psychoeducational opportunities; * To facilitate group therapy and support groups for parents and sub-clinical populations (e.g., body image, disordered eating, etc.) From Kansas City to Denver, there are very few eating disorder services available. For the geographically challenged, that is the entire state of Kansas, all 83,000 square miles and almost three million people. And like the rest of the country, we have people who struggle with body image, self-esteem, anxiety and depression, body dysmorphia, disordered eating, chronic dieting, damaged relationships with food, and eating disorders. In the Spring of 2022, after experiencing a spike in the number of patients presenting with these issues, Unbound Recovery launched as a passion project for myself, Stephanie Wick, and Anna Binder-McAsey. I am a Marriage and Family Therapist. Anna is a Registered Dietician. Both of us work in Manhattan, Kansas (aka “The Little Apple”) and maintain active, successful practices within our respective fields. Throughout the COVID pandemic, and within each of our practices, we experienced an increase in the number of eating disordered patients as young as 11 or 12 years old, signaling to us a critical need for specialized treatment services within our community. Together, we formed Unbound Recovery, LLC to meet the rising need for eating disorder treatment in Kansas. And with virtually an entire state in need, Unbound fills a vital resource gap. Unbound offers eating disorder informed and collaborative mental health and nutrition services to adolescents and adults via in-person and telehealth sessions. We maintain a full-time mental health therapist, registered dietician, and care coordinator and hope to expand soon to include intensive outpatient services for those in more acute need. We have engaged with our communities to provide education and resources to other medical and mental health providers and work collaboratively with providers from across the state. As a new practice, our focus during the past year has been establishing relationships within our communities, building a solid provider base, engaging in educational opportunities, and navigating insurance (a necessary evil). Not only does Unbound Recovery provide top notch clinical services for those who struggle with disordered eating and clinical level eating disorders, we also endeavor to educate and change the narrative around food and body image in our state. As Lindsey and Lexi Kite state in their book “More Than a Body”, positive body image isn’t believing your body looks good, it’s knowing your body is good regardless of how it looks.

  • Self Identified Competition

ED Care, Kansas City - Bellatore, Kansas City - Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS - Students only Most notable is that Unbound Recovery meets a critical service gap in Kansas. As mentioned, there are virtually no higher-level treatment options between Kansas City and Denver and far too few trained outpatient providers. It's less a matter of competition and more a matter of need. Kansas is 80% rural or frontier, thus the need for quality on-site and remote care is high.
