Business Plan
The City has an annual growth rate, according to the University of Portland, of 4% a year. We currently sit at 1,445 residents with about 780 residences. We are located in the heart of the Oregon Dunes National Park and are nestled between two sport fishery lakes. One lake drains through the Siltcoos River down to the ocean, offering the only location in the United States where individuals can canoe from an inland lake down to the ocean and back. Dunes City is a relatively new (incorporated in 1962) Oregon community created in the historic Westlake area. The former community of Booth was home to a large logging company operation in the 1800's. Most of the mill employees lived in the Westlake area which was formally established with the installation of a post office in 1904. The area is a treasure trove of history of the growth of a very small timber town in the Pacific northwest. Original buildings still dot the landscape, as do the original school house, the Christiansen haberdashery, and the fish smoke house. By connecting the north beach area with the south beach area at Westlake, the tourism opportunities in both locations can share their offerings. Additionally, every year an estimated 10,000 cyclists traverse Hwy 101 from Portland (and points north) down to Crescent City in California. Biking on Hwy 101 is a risk in and of itself. The trail proposed by Dunes City would get the cyclist off the busy highway and put them on a back-road area where they can enjoy the countryside, learn some history, and eventually find a place of overnight rest.

Self Identified Competition
Our biggest competitor, but also our closest ally, is the City of Florence, Oregon. We often compete for the same grant dollars - which usually ends up with Florence getting the nod. Dunes City is smaller than Florence, but has all of the outdoor activities that Florence boasts. We are just beginning to grow and improve. Investors may have an opportunity to get in on the ground floor, so to speak, of a hot spot on the Oregon coast.
