  • Funding Usage

I am a certified Infant Swimming Resource instructor, whose mission is to end childhood drowning. ISR lessons are for children ages 6months to 6 years old, and focus on Self-Rescue skills in the pool. Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1-4 years old. Supervision breaks down, gates get left open- children have the ability to learn how to self-rescue in the water- let's give them a chance. I am looking to fund the building of a year round indoor pool facility, to give the southern new hampshire community access to these lessons. Although, for many students there is lesson fees associated with this cost- I mean what I said; I am in the mission to end childhood drowning. In doing so, I am offering full tuition scholarships to students whose families cannot financially afford these lessons. In addition, I'd like to partner with organizations whom are helping underprivileged families in our area to get access to these life-saving lessons. For example, homeless families and those in our foster care system.

  • Business Plan

There is a massive need in our area for self-rescue swim lessons for our youngest population. Right now, I am only able to 3-4 hours of swim lessons: due to the constraints of swimming pool facilities. I could reach so many more families with access to my own pool facility. The demand is extremely high, I just do not have the facilities to support it, yet. Infant Swimming Resource has been around for over 60 years. It is the pioneer of the self-rescue swimming program for infants and small children. The founders are brilliant, with very notable backgrounds and careers that have made this program the safest one out there. Children as young as 6 months old are able to take ISR lessons. They will learn how to hold their breath under water, and come up for air, and float on their backs until they can be rescued. Once a child is walking steadily, they are ready for the next phase: swim-float-swim. These children learn to swim under water, rotate to a floating position to breathe and rest, and the flip back over to under water swimming. They repeat this sequence until the reach the pool edge, or the stairs to safely get out. These lessons take place every day, Monday-Friday, for a maximum of 10 minutes and last about 6-8 weeks. By the end of their program, these children practice their skills wearing various levels of clothing: summer, fall, winter, to give them an opportunity to see how that changes their buoyancy. We know that accidents typically happen not in our bathing suits, but actually in our regular clothes- so it's important to make sure children are able to practice this way too. I am an extremely driven woman in small business, that does not settle. I have two children of my own, both whom are graduates of this program and I have seen with my own eyes what a difference this program can make for families. My children have gained so much confidence and competence in this program. I am a Windham, NH resident, born and raised in Merrimack, NH and have always been invested in my community. My mother-in-law was the founder and President of the Rockingham County Family Promise non-profit, that gave homeless families both a place to live, but also skills to prepare them to go off on their own. If given the opportunity to build my own facility, I will be able to create partnerships with the foster care system, and other organizations that work with our underprivileged youth. My goal is to have 25% of my students be on need-based full scholarship. Let's give our community a chance, and end childhood drowning!

  • Self Identified Competition

Right now, there are no "competitors" in our market in NH. I have a colleague in Concord, NH that teaches ISR lessons, but I wouldn't consider her a competitor. There are many swimming programs for youth, but the focus isn't on self-rescue or survival swimming, or drowning prevention. 1. Foundation: we are founded on child development; sensorimotor learning. Children do not learn to walk by walking for long periods of time. They practice for short stints every day. ISR lessons meet every day, Monday-Friday, for a maximum of 10 minutes in the pool- over the course of 6-8 weeks. This strategy allows students to learn the way they learn all other sensorimotor skills. 2. Outcome: our program is focused on building confidence and competence in self-rescue swimming. Children do not graduate until they consistently demonstrate their proficiency in either the floating (ages 6months) or swim-float-swim (12month and up). The program doesn't end because the class session is over; it ends when the child is skilled. 3. Structure: lessons are one-on-one with a certified instructor. There are no group classes, and parents don't swim their child. These lessons are custom tailored to each child's skills and abilities, to ensure they're able to reach their end goal. At the end of the program, the instructor will have parents join in, so they can learn how to practice these skills at home. 4. Instructor certification is rigorous, and not all student instructors get certified. As you'd imagine, there is a major component of in pool training with real students and a master instructor. In addition, instructors go through intense academic training on child development, sensorimotor learning, as well as medical conditions and impacts to swimming. Each instructor must complete year round training to maintain their certification as well.
